How to Maintain Your Vape Pen

If you’ve just bought a vape pen, or are thinking about buying one, you’re going to want to know how to take care of it properly. Vape pens are fairly easy to maintain, so if you follow these rules you’ll be enjoying smooth hits for a long time to come!

Vape battery care

The battery for your vape pen is the part needed for powering the heating coil in the oil cartridge. Like most electronics, it’s best to keep your battery away from excessive heat and moisture. If you suspect your battery has been compromised in any way, DO NOT USE IT. There is a danger that some poorly made vape pens will combust when overheated or compromised in some way, but the risk isn’t very significant if you use your pen properly.

Adjustable voltage batteries

Some battery models give you the option to adjust how much power is sent through the heating element, but we recommend you keep it adjusted to a lower voltage. While sending more power through the heating element will give you more vapor with each drag, it also increases the likelihood that your battery will overheat. It also may cause your oil to smolder inside the cartridge when you’re not taking a hit, which is a shameful waste.

Vape cartridges

As for cartridge care, it depends what kind of cartridge you’re using, as well as what kind of oil is inside it, but most types of oil have a shelf life of 90 days. The most common kind of cartridge is a wick cartridge. These have CO2 oil contained in a chamber with a wick and a heating coil. The coil vaporizes the oil soaked in the wick, then the vapor travels into a different chamber leading to the mouthpiece. Ideally, you should keep your vapor cartridge upright at all times. One of the issues with the common wick cartridges is that the oil can sometimes leak out of its chamber and into the vapor chamber. Once it’s in the wrong chamber you won’t be able to vaporize that oil, but keeping the cartridge upright will help to minimize any leakage.

If you’re concerned about leakage, you may want to purchase cartridges with a metal column in the middle instead of a wick. These styles have almost no problems with leakage, and some are refillable. If a vape pen is your preferred way to enjoy cannabis, then metal cartridges are a worthwhile investment.
